Early Interceptive Orthodontics

Fix Small Problems Before They Become Big Problems

At about 7 years of age, when a child’s adult teeth begin to appear, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends an orthodontic examination. At this early stage of development we can more easily address and correct small orthodontic problems before they become big, expensive ones. Using modern appliances, we can guide your child’s teeth and optimize their bite function. In some instances, we can help you and your child avoid braces entirely.

And we know just how to make children smile, too. We do everything we can to make their visits to Robinwood Smiles feel more like an adventure. Maybe that’s why so many of your Hagerstown friends and neighbors choose Robinwood Smiles for their children and recommend us to their friends and relatives.

FAQs About Pediatric Orthodontics

What are some signs that I should take my child in for an orthodontic evaluation?

  • Did the child lose their baby teeth noticeably early or late?
  • Does the child have a hard time chewing or biting food?
  • Does the child tend to breathe through the mouth rather than the nose?
  • Does the child have a habit of finger- or thumb-sucking?
  • Have you noticed crowded, misplaced, or blocked teeth?
  • Does their jaw pop or make sounds when opening and closing?
  • Do the teeth seem to come together abnormally, or not come together at all?
  • Do the jaws and teeth seem disproportionate to the rest of the face?
  • Do the front teeth seem crowded?

At what age should I take my kids for an orthodontic consult?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children first visit an orthodontist around the age of 7. Taking action before all the permanent teeth have erupted and before jaw growth has slowed has many advantages:

  • We can correct and guide the growth of your child’s jaw to help permanent teeth come in straight.
  • We have the opportunity to regulate the width of the upper and lower arches.
  • We can more easily create more space for crowded teeth.
  • We can avoid the need for permanent tooth extractions later in life.
  • We can correct thumb-sucking and help improve minor speech problems.

Regular or “comprehensive” orthodontic treatment can start as early as age 10, but every child is different. It’s best to have kids under observation with an orthodontist so they can start at the best age for them!
